Additional information: The Sign Icon of the Mother of God of Kursk-Root is one of the most revered sacred objects of the Russian Orthodox Church. It was discovered in 1295 near Kursk, at the place where the Kursk Root Hermitage would later be founded. According to legend, the icon was found face down under a tree, and at that place a spring began to flow.

The name "Sign" is associated with a special iconographic type: the Most Holy Theotokos is depicted with hands raised in prayer, and on her chest is the image of the Christ Child in a medallion, symbolizing the Incarnation of the Word of God. The icon is considered miraculous and protective, especially in times of trouble and danger.

The icon became famous for many miracles and healings. Since the 17th century, an annual procession has been held with the icon from the Kursk Root Hermitage to the city of Kursk — a tradition that continues to this day.
